The child’s aunt, Andreina Sarmiento, told BBC News that Klyiber’s condition is not life-threatening. She said he only suffered a few minor scratches on his arms and legs and had no other injuries.
Klyiber was found beneath the ruins of his family home in La Guaira State, on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast. Earlier reports indicated that the region was among the hardest hit by the earthquake.
According to Sarmiento, the rescue operation was unsuccessful on its first attempt. A team of British rescuers initially tried to reach the boy but was unable to do so. He was eventually pulled alive from the rubble by a Jordanian search-and-rescue team.
Sarmiento also said she would care for her nephew “with a mother’s love” until her older sister is found. The 23-year-old aunt remains hopeful that Klyiber’s parents are still alive and will be rescued.
In Venezuela, a two-year-old boy named Klyiber Moran was rescued from the rubble six days after a devastating earthquake.
