Afghan Embassy in Kuwait handed over to Taliban

The Afghan embassy in Kuwait was handed over to a Taliban diplomat this week.

The Taliban diplomat has started his work at the Afghan embassy in Kuwait, replacing Sayed Javed Hashemi, the previous government’s ambassador, according to sources.

Maulvi Mohammad Shafiq Khatib has started his work as Taliban ambassador to Kuwait, the sources said.

He previously served as head of consular affairs and head of borders at the Taliban Foreign Ministry.

The handover of the embassy to the Taliban comes as reactions to the process of normalizing relations with the group have increased in recent months.

Critics see the normalization of relations as a step towards legitimizing the Taliban, regardless of the human rights situation and extensive restrictions on the rights and freedoms of Afghan citizens.
