Ahmad Massoud: My Father’s Path Will Continue Until Afghanistan’s Liberation
On the 25th anniversary of Ahmad Shah Massoud’s martyrdom, Ahmad Massoud, leader of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, said that the path his father started “will continue until Afghanistan’s liberation.”
In a message, he said that his father’s name and ideals are still alive among the opposition to the Taliban after 25 years, and he considered preserving this legacy a heavy responsibility.
The National Resistance Front has implicated the Taliban and al-Qaeda in the assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud; however, reliable historical reports and sources have identified two al-Qaeda members as the perpetrators of the attack.
Analysis
This message was released at the same time as the Taliban imposed restrictions on public commemorations of Ahmad Shah Massoud. Ahmad Massoud’s message shows that the National Resistance Front continues to use his father’s legacy and position as a symbol for political mobilization and strengthening opposition to the Taliban.
