US Congresswoman: Taliban Should Not Be Recognized by Washington

US House of Representatives Representative Nancy Mays has announced that she has introduced a bill to prevent the recognition of governments that support terrorism.

In a message, she called the Taliban a “terrorist group” and said that the bill considers the Taliban as a “foreign terrorist organization” and the group’s government as a “state sponsor of terrorism.” According to Mays, if the bill is passed, US federal government agencies will be prohibited from recognizing the Taliban government.

Mays also emphasized that the US should not recognize “terrorism and terrorists.”

In response to this position, the author of the message welcomed what she called “good news” for Afghan women and girls and expressed hope that the Taliban’s restrictions would end.

He also called on the Afghan community to monitor the activities of individuals lobbying for the Taliban abroad and to be sensitive to their possible role in future political developments in Afghanistan.
