Human rights organizations Hengaw and HRANA have reported that Humaira Sharifi, an Afghan citizen who was arrested during Iran’s widespread protests in 2025, has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Ms. Sharifi remains detained in Tehran’s Evin Prison, and her five-year sentence was recently communicated to her.
According to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, details regarding the charges against her and the court branch that issued the verdict remain unclear due to a lack of judicial transparency.
HRANA reported that despite suffering from a skin disease and mental health issues, Ms. Sharifi has been denied adequate access to medical and psychological care.
Following her arrest during last year’s protests, Ms. Sharifi was initially transferred to Qarchak Prison. On February 16, 2026, she was moved from Qarchak to the women’s ward of Evin Prison, where she has remained in custody ever since.
United Nations human rights experts confirmed in March that Afghan nationals were among those arrested and killed during Iran’s recent protests.
The nationwide protests in Iran in recent years, particularly during January, were met with extensive repression. A large number of Iranian citizens, as well as Afghan migrants living in the country, were reportedly arrested or killed during the crackdown.
