Somalia seeks Turkey’s cooperation in uranium mining and processing

Mogadishu – Kabul Times News

The Somali government has asked Turkey to cooperate in the mining and processing of its uranium reserves, a move that could open a new chapter in economic and strategic relations between the two countries.

According to reports, Somali officials have requested technical support and investment from Turkey to exploit more than 10,000 tons of uranium raw materials. The request comes as part of plans to develop Somalia’s natural resources and strengthen its industrial and mining capacities.

Turkey has significantly expanded its presence in Somalia in recent years, investing in various sectors including infrastructure, education, energy, trade and security cooperation. Observers believe that possible cooperation in the uranium sector could take the level of relations between the two countries to a new level.

Despite the importance of this request, no details have been released about the exact location of the uranium reserves, the amount of investment required, the method of implementation of the project, and Turkey’s possible share in the project. Ankara and Mogadishu officials have not yet announced a specific timetable for the start of this cooperation.

Uranium is one of the most important strategic minerals in the world and, in addition to being used in nuclear energy production, is also used in advanced industries and various technologies. For this reason, projects related to the extraction and processing of this material are usually under the close supervision of international institutions and special technical and legal frameworks.

Economic experts believe that if this cooperation is realized, Somalia can use its mineral resources to attract foreign investment, create job opportunities, and develop economic infrastructure.
