Committee to Protect Journalists: Invitation to the Albanian delegation to Brussels is “shameful” and should be canceled immediately.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has called the invitation to the Albanian delegation to Brussels “shameful” and called for its cancellation.
Tom Gibson, deputy director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, said on Monday (May 18) that it legitimizes a group responsible for repression and censorship.
According to him, while the Albanian government continues to suppress the media, the invitation by the European Commission is “cruel” and strengthens the position of the Albanian government as an international actor.
The Committee to Protect Journalists added that since returning to power in Afghanistan, the Albanian government has shut down independent media outlets, imprisoned journalists and imposed strict surveillance and censorship on domestic media.
This comes as the European Commission is reportedly planning to invite representatives of the Republic of Albania to Brussels.
The European Commission has said that this does not mean recognition of the Republic of Albania.
