UN: Taliban restrictions threaten future of Afghan children
The United Nations says the restrictions imposed by the Taliban have seriously threatened the future of Afghan children, especially girls.
According to the UN Human Rights Department, based on the words of Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, children and adolescents, especially girls, are deprived of access to education, freedom of expression and participation in public life.
The institution says the consequences of these restrictions are not limited to deprivation of education, but have also negatively affected the intellectual, psychological and social development of children.
The report also warns of increasing risks such as forced marriage, child marriage, child labor and gender-based violence.
According to the UN, children living in poverty or in remote areas, as well as children with disabilities and children from marginalized ethnic and religious groups, are most vulnerable to harm and deprivation.
The UN has emphasized that protecting children’s rights and providing them with access to education and participation in society is essential to securing Afghanistan’s future.
