As tensions over Iran’s nuclear program continue to rise, US officials are talking about a new approach to any potential deal with Tehran, one that emphasizes the “permanence” of commitments.
According to Axios, the US President’s special representative for the Middle East announced in a closed-door meeting that the US government would only consider an agreement that has no end date and that its restrictions continue indefinitely.
Meanwhile, CNN reported that various scenarios are on the table at the US Department of Defense, including the option of attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities. According to the media outlet, senior military officials have warned in internal meetings about operational difficulties, the possibility of escalating the conflict and the risk of casualties for US forces.
Nevertheless, the US vice president stressed that the White House’s priority remains diplomacy. He expressed hope that Tehran would come to the planned talks in Geneva with a constructive approach and take a political solution seriously. According to him, Washington’s main goal is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons; a goal that is preferable to be achieved through negotiations, although other options are not ruled out.
The increase in US military activity in the region and the intensification of political positions on both sides show that the Iranian nuclear issue has once again entered a critical and decisive phase.
