An Afghan female journalist, despite holding a French humanitarian visa and completing all required legal procedures, was prevented from departing by officials at Islamabad International Airport.
Afghan refugees, after enduring years of hardship, economic pressure, psychological distress, and constant fear of arrest or deportation, continue to struggle in hopes of reaching a safe destination where they can begin a new life free from discrimination and insecurity.
However, the Pakistani authorities have repeatedly created obstacles for Afghan refugees by using unreasonable excuses, often preventing them from traveling safely and legally from Islamabad Airport.
In many cases, Afghan journalists and refugees are forced to wait for months or even years in Pakistan under extremely difficult conditions until they finally receive their visa. Yet, even after obtaining the visa and completing all legal exit procedures—including paying heavy fines for the exit permit (exit paper)—they still face restrictions and travel bans at the airport.
Unfortunately, this Afghan journalist had already faced the cancellation of a previous flight and was forced to purchase a new airline ticket at a very high cost. Despite this, she was again stopped and denied permission to travel.
This incident comes despite calls from international organizations, including SHARP, urging the Pakistani government to ensure safe and lawful departure for Afghan refugees. Nevertheless, reports indicate that Pakistani authorities continue to obstruct Afghan travelers through various pretexts and engage in extortion and illegal demands.
