The Wall Street Journal has reported that Iran may consider using unconventional methods including “mine-carrying trained dolphins” to target United States warships in the event of escalating tensions in the region.

According to the report, military analysts believe Tehran has invested heavily in asymmetric naval warfare capabilities over the past years. Alongside tools such as naval mines, fast attack boats, and drones, Iran may also explore non-traditional tactics aimed at challenging US naval forces in the Persian Gulf.

The Wall Street Journal noted that the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global oil and gas shipments pass. Any disruption or military confrontation in the area could have an immediate impact on international energy markets.

The report added that the US Navy has increased its security measures in recent years to counter maritime threats in the Gulf, focusing on protecting warships and ensuring the safety of international shipping routes.

The report comes as political and security tensions between Tehran and Washington continue, raising concerns over potential instability in the region’s key waterways.
