The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with financial support from the Government of Japan, is implementing a new project to strengthen livelihoods and increase the resilience of vulnerable communities in Afghanistan.
The project, titled “Sustainable Income Strategies for Strengthening Alternative Livelihoods,” with a budget of US$2.35 million, will be implemented from March 2026 to March 2027 in Balkh and Nimroz provinces.
The initiative has been launched at a time when residents of these areas are facing multiple challenges, including the impacts of climate change, economic hardship, limited job opportunities, declining economies dependent on poppy cultivation, and an increase in returnees.
The main focus of the project is to support vulnerable groups, especially women, female-headed households, youth, and returnees, to provide them with access to sustainable and alternative sources of income.
The project focuses on improving production infrastructure, including irrigation systems, optimal water resource management, and creating the necessary facilities to better connect producers to the market. Strengthening local value chains and creating new economic opportunities are also key aspects of the project, which aims to reduce dependence on illegal activities and develop a sustainable economy.
In addition to the economic dimensions, the program also pays special attention to strengthening peaceful coexistence and cooperation between host communities and returnees to strengthen social cohesion at the local level.
This project is designed within the framework of UNDP’s emergency and development programs and in line with the human security priorities of the Government of Japan. Its ultimate goal is to contribute to sustainable economic growth and strengthen long-term stability through community-based development in Afghanistan.
